Collaborative Creative Writing with OpenAI’s ChatGPT

Ever since I ventured into the realm of artificial intelligence and began my journey at OpenAI, it has been fascinating to witness the rapid advancements. As an author, I am frequently confronted with the question of whether AI will eventually replace writers entirely. In my personal opinion, while AI might become proficient in generating creative content that rivals human output, it can never supplant the unique allure of human authors. Often, our preferences are not solely based on objective measures but are deeply influenced by the narratives of the individuals behind the creations. The things we admire often resonate with us because of the intriguing stories woven by their creators. For instance, my fondness for Stephen King’s books stems not only from their excellence but also from my fascination with Stephen King himself. While AI may be capable of composing music on par with Billie Eilish, it can never replicate the captivating personal journey that she embodies.

The future appears to be a fusion of human and AI-generated content. Some content will be crafted entirely by AI, valued solely for its objective quality. Some will be the creation of humans, enriched by their personal narratives. And then there will be content collaboratively produced by creative humans and intelligent AI, offering the best of both worlds.

A noteworthy phenomenon emerged when AI began defeating chess masters – the overall quality of human chess playing improved. Modern chess players had the opportunity to learn from both humans and AI, and they could challenge themselves against formidable AI adversaries. This serves as an intriguing example of how the presence of AI can enhance human capabilities. It is reasonable to assume that this effect could extend to other domains.

In a further exploration of the collaboration between AI and humans, OpenAI has recently introduced ChatGPT, a novel model and chat interface designed to investigate the interactions between humans and AI. You can explore it here: https://openai.com/blog/chatgpt/

The chat interface streamlines conversations with the model, facilitating the pursuit of various goals, such as acquiring new knowledge or engaging in games. I have discovered that it is particularly valuable for brainstorming. While it readily generates story ideas upon request, it also allows for collaborative efforts, enabling users to make critical choices. Subsequently, you can request the model to transform these ideas into outlines, chapter descriptions, and even sections of written content.

You can start with a prompt like this (change it to whatever genre you want):

Let's write a science fiction story together. Ask me for input about characters, plot etc.

As you go back and forth with the model it will keep track of the suggestions in the chat history, so when you ask it to turn the conversation into an outline or a specific number of chapters, ChatGPT will merge them all together.

You can tell ChatGPT to try a different approach:

I'd like to make it more about what she finds on the other side of the door. I think that's interesting. Let's say she finds a parallel Earth where the Roman civilization discovered gun powder and kept going.

If ChatGPT doesn’t come up with the right number of chapters, you can use a prompt like this to give it more creative license:

I need a 30 chapter version. Add characters and subplots.

Give this a try and see if it helps you brainstorm and think about story development on a deeper level.
